When to Start Laser Hair Removal Before Summer (and Why May Matters)

May is the worst month to walk into our Niagara Falls clinic and say "I want to be laser hair-free for my July vacation." Not because we won't see you — we will. But the math doesn't lie, and we'd rather tell you the truth than sell you a fantasy.
Here's how laser hair removal timing actually works, and why starting in May still makes sense for this summer (and absolutely makes sense for next summer).
Why the timing rule is non-negotiable
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. The laser heats the follicle, damaging the growth structure. Over multiple sessions, regrowth becomes thinner, finer, and eventually stops. Two implications most clinics don't explain clearly:
1. It only works on hair currently in the growth phase. Roughly 20–30% of your hairs are growing at any given moment. The rest are dormant or shedding. That's why you need multiple sessions — to catch each follicle when it's vulnerable.
2. The laser can't tell hair melanin apart from skin melanin. That's why laser hair removal and tanned skin don't mix. Treating tanned or sunburned skin risks burns, discoloration, and ineffective treatment. Reputable clinics will refuse to treat tan skin.
So if you book a treatment in late June after a beach weekend, expect us to send you home.
The session timeline math
AreaTypical sessionsSpacingFace, underarms, bikini line, lower legs6–84–6 weeksFull legs, men's chest/back8–106–8 weeks
A full course is 6–12 months from start to "I don't think about shaving anymore."
Start in May and you can realistically complete 2–3 sessions before peak summer. That won't get you to "permanent reduction" — but you'll be noticeably less hairy in time for summer, and positioned to finish the course in fall when sun exposure backs off. Wait until July and you lose the entire summer to the no-laser-on-tan-skin rule.
Why Alma Soprano Titanium is different
Most "laser hair removal" horror stories come from older Alexandrite or IPL devices that worked great on pale skin and dark hair, and not so great on anything else. They were also painful — the rubber-band-snap most people remember.
We use Alma Soprano Titanium, which combines three wavelengths (755 nm Alexandrite, 810 nm Diode, 1064 nm Nd:YAG) and a cooled handpiece. Three results:
- Works safely on all skin types, including darker tones older devices couldn't treat
- Effective on a wider range of hair colors and textures
- Not painful — the cooled handpiece keeps the skin comfortable; most patients call it a "warm massage." That's where our clinic gets its name.
Pre-treatment do's and don'ts
In the 4 weeks before your first session:
Do:
- Shave the area within 24 hours of your appointment (don't wax, pluck, or epilate — that removes the target)
- Stay out of direct sun. SPF 50+ on any exposed treatment area
- Stop retinoids on the treatment area for 1 week prior
- Drink water — dehydrated skin tolerates treatment less well
Don't:
- No tanning beds. No spray tans (the pigment confuses the laser)
- No waxing, plucking, threading, or epilator. Shave only.
- No active acne treatments or chemical peels on the area for 2 weeks
- No bleaching the hair (laser needs pigment to target)

Frequently asked questions
How many sessions will I need?
Most areas need 6–8 sessions for permanent reduction, spaced 4–6 weeks apart. We give you a customized plan at consultation based on hair color, skin type, and area.
Can I do laser hair removal with darker skin?
Yes. Alma Soprano Titanium safely treats all six Fitzpatrick skin types. Historically a no-go on older devices.
Does it work on blonde, red, gray, or white hair?
No. Laser targets pigment in the hair. Hairs with little to no melanin don't respond reliably. We're honest about this at consultation.
Is it really pain-free?
For most patients, yes. The cooled handpiece keeps the skin comfortable. Patients who've used older lasers consistently say this feels completely different.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes. Shave as often as you like. Waxing, plucking, and epilating are the methods that interfere with treatment.
